The collection bears witness to the life and economic organisation of the
mountain people, whose activities were limited in the past to sheep breeding and
to the searching for firewood, coal and chestnuts in the forests.
Skiing Museum

Created at the initiative of the local Ski Club, the museum is not only
interesting in terms of skiing as a sport, but also because it highlights the
local traditions and culture. The museum is divided into three sections:
traditional life in the snowy mountains of the Casentino, the development of the
ski as tool from the beginning of the twentieth century till now and the history
of skiing as a competitive sport.

The whole collection, restored in 1990, contains 516 examples of 173 species of
Italian birds, many of which are typical of the Casentino area.

Located on the first floor of the Palagio Castle, the collection includes
paintings and sculptures of living artists and artists of the recent past. Many
of them are Tuscan artists or working in Tuscany. About two hundred works of art
created by 160 artists are on exhibition. Just to mention some of them: Pietro
Annigoni, Pietro Cascella, Giovanni Colacicchi, Primo Conti, Salvatore Fiume,
Mino Maccari, Marino Marini, Quinto Martini, Pietro Parigi, Giò Pomodori, Ottone
Rosai, Sergio Scatizzi, Remo Squillantini, Emilio Vedova.

A collection of documents, historical photographs and various tools once used in
the wool production for the famous Casentino fabric is to be find on the first
floor of the Lanificio, a rare example of industrial archeology.
Museum in the castle of Porciano

The museum, situated in the Guidi castle, houses a collection of peasant tools
and domestic equipment dating back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,
illustrating rural civilisation in the Casentino area. Besides ceramics, glass-
and earthenware dated between the fourteenth and the eightteenth century, there
are also utensils and handicraft from North Dakota on exhibition. |
